Allspice: Pimenta dioica or pimento officinalis

• For external use only, always dilute.
• Use in very small quantities as it may be a skin irritant.
• Do not use if pregnant.
• Spicy, warm, sweet aroma like the mixture of clover, juniper, cinnamon and pepper.
• Use for arthritis, bronchitis, chills, cough, depression, fatigue, flatulence, indigestion, muscle cramps, nausea, tension, sore muscles, and stress.
• Great in hot baths or bath products.
• Blends well with patchouli, ylang ylang, lavender and geranium.

Amber: Pinus succinofera fossil

• Distilled from the fossil amber of the prehistoric giant conifer tree.
• It has an incredible exotic fragrance.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• Use for anxiety, depression, tension and stress.
• It is a calming oil.
• Resinous, warm and smoky with floral citrus undertones.
• Blends well with geranium, pine, spruce, cedarwood, myrrh, galbanum, frankincense, cypress, clove, aniseed, orange, citrus, lemon, benzoin and rose absolute.

Amyris: Amyris balsamifera

• Similar to traditional sandalwood oil.
• Excellent replacement for sandalwood oil in blends.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• Use as an anti-septic, balsamic, muscle relaxant, and sedative.
• Good for stress and depression.
• Great for meditation.
• May be used as a fixative.
• Blends well with lavender, oak moss, sassafras, citronella and other wood oils.

Angelica Root & Seed: Angelica Archangelica or Archangelica officinalis

• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• Do not use if diabetic or pregnant.
• Phototoxic. (avoid bright sunlight for 8 hours after use)
• Used in aromatherapy for anemia, anorexia, hangovers, arthritis, asthma, colds, depression, and sinus problems.
• Angelica seed is sweeter than the root and not as potent.
• Root aroma is rich, earthy and herbaceous.
• Seed oil is safer for home use and has a fruity, spicy, earthy and herbaceous aroma.
• Use sparingly in blends.
• Blends well with coriander, bergamot, cedarwood, frankincense, patchouli, clary sage, citrus and vetiver.

Anise: Illicium verum or pompinella anisum

• Similar to Anise (seed), this oil is much safer for aromatherapy.
• Obtained from the fruit and leaves of the evergreen tree.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• A dangerous narcotic in large doses, use in moderation.
• Do not use if pregnant.
• It is used as an aphrodisiac.
• Use for asthma, emotional balance, heartache, indigestion, aches and pains.
• Can be made into a salve for scabies or lice.
• Pale yellow color with a warm, spicy and very sweet licorice-like scent.
• Blends well with rose, lavender, orange and spicy scents.

Balsam Peru: Myroxylon pereirae or Myroxylon balsamum

• Very thick, dark brown and slow pouring oil that is warm and vanilla-like.
• Has a smoky, balsamic aroma.
• Serves as an excellent perfume fixative
• Great for many skin conditions.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• Use for colds, coughs, rheumatism, sores, stress, low blood pressure, rashes, and asthma.
• Grounding and calming.
• Blends well with ylang ylang, patchouli, petitgrain, sandalwood, rose, spice, floral and oriental blends.

Balsam Tolu: Resin: Myroxylon balsamum

• This ‘true’ balsam has a soft sweet hyacinth-like note.
• An excellent fixative soluble in alcohol.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive
• Use for bedsores, cuts, chapped skin, rheumatism, scabies, and laryngitis.
• Blends well with mimosa, ylang ylang, sandalwood, labdanum, orange blossom, patchouli, cedarwood, spice, orientals and florals.

Bay: Pimento racemosa

• Used in colognes and perfumes
• Soothes itching and repels insects.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive
• May irritate mucous membranes.
• Do not use during pregnancy.
• Use in moderation for colds, neuralgia, anorexia, hair growth, sprains, and poor circulation.
• Great as a tonic to promote hair growth and control dandruff.
• Stimulating and warming.
• Strong, spicy but smooth and sweet aroma.
• Blends well with rose, cedarwood, eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary, ylang ylang, and spice scents.

Benzoin Resinoid: Styrax tonkinensis or benzoin styrax

• This oil is distilled from gum benzoin and is extremely thick.
• Can replace tincture of benzoin as a fixative in most perfumes.
• Creates a blissful sense of euphoria and is said to warm the heart, purify the mind and comfort the soul.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• Use for coughs, as an antiseptic or anti-fungal, for flu, gout, chills, cuts, and asthma.
• Used as a preservative for fats in soaps.
• Blends well with rosewood, sandalwood, rose, lemon, juniper berry, myrrh, jasmine, frankincense, coriander, citrus and spice scents.

Bergamot: Citrus bergamia

• Commonly used in perfumes and colognes.
• This is the main flavoring in earl grey tea.
• Small amounts have been said to sooth skin irritations.
• It is an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and enhances immunity.
• Use to treat infections and herpes of all types.
• Use to deodorize, aid digestion, reduce depression and reduce anxiety.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive
• Phototoxic. (avoid bright sunlight 8 hours or more after use)
• Calming, uplifting, clean scent that is floral and fruity.
• Blends well with clary sage, frankincense, geranium, lavender, lemon, neroli, orange and petitgrain.

Black Pepper: Piper nigrum

• This is an energizing oil that is used in many men's fragrances.
• Warm, spicy, and stimulating.
• Use in moderation.
• Use as an aphrodisiac, antiseptic, antitoxic, antispasmodic, and analgesic.
• Use for pain, loss of appetite, nausea, viruses, and stiffness.
• Stimulates blood flow and increases circulation.
• Blends well in small quantities with oriental and floral scents, frankincense, sandalwood, lavender, rosemary and marjoram.

Cabreuva: Myrocarpus fastigiatus

• This oil is related to balsam.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• Use for antiseptic, chills, colds, cuts, and scars.
• Use as a fixative in perfumes and soap, especially floral, woody and oriental types.
• Blends well with sweet woody and floral scents, rose, cassia, mimosa, and cedarwood

Cade: Juniperus oxycedrus

• This oil has a very pungent and smoky fragrance (similar to smoked kippers).
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• Do not use if pregnant.
• This oil is effective for skin conditions such as dermatitis, hair loss, dandruff and eczema.
• Use for detox, as an analgesic, antiseptic and disinfectant.
• Blends well with thyme, clove, tea tree, pine and medicinal bases.

Cajeput: Melaleuca leucadendron (Native Tea Tree) or Melaleuca cajeputi

• Also known as tea tree oil, white tea tree oil or swamp tea tree oil.
• Used in liniments, decongestant aids, and insect repellents.
• It is not the same as true tea tree oil (melaleuca alternifolia) or
niaouli (melaleuca viridiflora).
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• Used as an antiseptic mixer in henna tattooing.
• Use for aches and pains, acne, asthma, insect bites (especially ant bites), sinus congestion, urinary, fungal and viral infection.
• This oil is known for producing a sensation of warmth and quickening of the pulse.
• Has a camphor-like, spicy odor.
• Blends well with bergamot, clove, lavender, eucalyptus, mints, wintergreen and rosewood.
• Invigorating and cleansing.

Calendula: Calendula officinalis

• This oil, infused from Marigolds, is used for healing scars, boils, warts, bruises, and skin rashes, etc.
• For external use only.
• Used as an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, and tonic.
• Blends well with oak moss, hyacinth and other floral and citrus scents.

Camphor: Cinnamomum camphora

• Do not use brown or yellow camphor as these are toxic and carcinogenic.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• Use in moderation.
• Used as an anti-inflammatory, an antiviral and is soothing to the skin.
• Repels insects and helps heal bruises.
• Commonly used in medications and perfumes but is not recommended for aromatherapy.
• Do not use if pregnant, asthmatic or epileptic.
• Has a spicy mothball-like aroma, penetrating and musty.
• Cold to the touch like menthol and numbs the peripheral sensory nerves.
•Dilute heavily for an analgesic rub or as a household cleaner.
• Blends well with cajeput and chamomile.

Camphor: Gum Crystals

• Used for making camphor oils for aches, sprains and sore and tired muscles.

Caraway Seed: Carum carvi

• This digestive aid is used to fragrance rye bread.
• It has a warm, sweet and spicy aroma.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• Use for bronchitis, colic, colds, gastric problems, and as an expectorant.
• Its warm, green and spicy-sweet scent is appetizing and great in diffusers.
• Has stimulant and carminative properties.
• Blends well with anise, cinnamon, eucalyptus and rosemary.

Carrot Seed: Daucus carota

• This exotic oil has a strong, earthy fragrance that is spicy and slightly woody.
• Effective for skin irritations and wrinkles
• Contains anti-oxidants.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• Use for glandular problems, liver congestion, and arthritis.
• Great in skin care products. (especially those used on the face)
• Great for diffusers.
• Blends well with chamomile, lavender, geranium, cedarwood, citrus and spice scents.

Cedarwood: Cedrus deodora

• Deodora Cedar is a true cedar.
• Has a strong pleasant woody aroma.
• Has antiseptic, astringent, fungicidal, stimulant and aphrodisiac properties.
• Blends well with rosewood, bergamot, cypress, jasmine, juniper, neroli, clary sage, vetiver, rosemary, ylang ylang and floral scents.

Celery Seed: Apium graveolens

• Used as a tonic for kidney troubles, liver troubles and fluid retention.
• Speeds up the elimination of uric acid.
• Use for arthritis, neuralgia, and jaundice.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• Do not use if pregnant.
• Warm, smoky, spicy-green aroma.
• Blends well with lavender, pine, tea tree, oak moss, and other spices.

Chamomile - German (Blue): Matricaria chamomilla

• Also know as German chamomile.
• Contains azulene which gives it a blue color.
• Commonly used as an anti-inflammatory.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• Use for abscesses, acne, flaky skin, bites, skin irritations, headaches, and skin regeneration.
• Smooth, apple-like scent.
• Used in many body care products.
• Blends well with geranium, lavender, patchouli, rose, benzoin, orange,
bergamot, lemon, ylang ylang, jasmine, and clary sage.
• Do not use if you are allergic to ragweed or are pregnant.

Cinnamon Leaf: Cinnamomum zeylanicum

• Not as sweet as oil cinnamon bark, or cassia.
• Flavor is slightly bitter and reminiscent of oil clove bud.
• Perfect for making soaps, candles, incense and for scenting potpourris.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• Use for lice, gum care, stress, loneliness, breathing problems, colds, and as an anti-fungal, etc.
• Do not use if pregnant.
• Spicy, woody with sharp fruity undertones.
• Refreshing and exotic.
• Blends well with ylang ylang, orange, mandarin, benzoin, balsam and in oriental mixtures.

Citronella: Cymbopogon nardus

• Known for its ability to repel mosquitoes (especially when mixed with Virginia cedarwood oil).
• Used in soaps, perfumes and pet products.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• Do not use if pregnant.
• Use for colds, perspiration, fatigue, flu, minor infections, and migraine.
• Citrus-grassy aroma.
• Fresh, light and fruity.
• A natural deodorant.

Clary Sage: Salvia scalaria

• Soothing, relaxing and pleasant addition to most perfumes and oils.
• Creates a sense of euphoria.
• Not the same as the herb eyesbright.

• Do not use if pregnant or drinking alcohol.
• Use for impotence, migraines, wrinkles, depression, acne, dandruff, high blood pressure, and hair loss.

Clove Bud: Eugenia caryophylatta or syzygium aromaticum

• Sweeter then clove leaf.
• Traditionally used for toothaches, as a flavoring and in perfumes and soaps.
• Repels moths.
• For external use only, always dilute to less than 1% solution.
• Some may be sensitive.
• The bud is less of an irritant than the leaf.
• Use for athlete's food, burns, nausea, and arthritis.
• An antibiotic, antihistamine, antioxidant, antiseptic, and expectorant.
• Spicy, penetrating, woody-sweet aroma.
• Warming and stimulating.
• Blends well with rose lavender, vanilla, clary sage, bergamot, bay, lavendin, allspice and ylang ylang.

Clove Penny Royale: Eugenia caryophylatta or syzygium aromaticum

• Used in candles, soaps, oils and perfumes as an alternative to clove bud
• Properties and uses are similar to clove bud.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Blends well with rose, lavender, vanilla, clary sage, bergamot, bay, lavendin, allspice and ylang ylang.

Coriander: Coriandrum sativum

• Aids in digestion.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• Stupefying in large doses, use with care.
• Use in moderation for headaches, pains, infections, measles, poor circulation, and water retention.
• A great disinfectant and stimulant.
• Use in soaps and body products.
• Good for allergies.

Cornmint: Mentha arvensis

• Use for respiratory complaints.

• An insect repellant that works best for fleas in bedding and/or wardrobes.
• Intense, penetrating, bright mint aroma.

Fennel (Sweet): Foeniculum vulgare

Fir Needle, Canadian: Abies balsamea

• Relaxes the nervous system and muscles.
• Milder than pine and a great substitute for it in recipes.

Fir Needle Siberian: Abies siberiensis

• An astringent and antiseptic.
• Good for men’s fragrances and shaving products.

Galbanum: Ferula galbaniflua

Helichrysum: Helichrysum italicum, H. angustifolia or helichrysum immortelle

• Often blended with rosehip seed oil for treating scars and acne.

• Use for bacterial infections, flu, nervous exhaustion, bruises, sore muscles, and allergies.
• A healing oil that is anti-inflammatory and regenerative.
• Raises spirits and has a honey, flowery scent.

Valerian: Valeriana fauriei

• Great for promoting sleep because of its relaxing properties.
• Do not use with other sleep inducing drugs.

• Try as a substitute for catnip with your cats.
• An antidandruff, antispasmodic, bactericidal, carminative, depressant of the central nervous system, hypnotic, and sedative.
• Used for hypochondria, irritability, epilepsy, migraine headaches, croup, vertigo, delirium, neuralgia, muscle cramps, gas pains, stomach cramps, spasms, depression, panic attacks, emotional stress, PMS, menstrual cramps, despondency, insomnia, anxiety, backache, and bruises.
• Blends well with patchouli, oak moss, pine, lavender, cedarwood, mandarin, petitgrain and rosemary.
• Use in moderation.

Vanilla Bourbon Absolute: Vanilla planifolia

• Sensual, warm, comforting and an aphrodisiac.
• Promotes a sense of well-being
• Great for hair products.
• Some may be sensitive.
• Use for anger, comfort, frustration, tension, and stress.
• Use in moderation if pregnant.

Vetiver: Vetiveria zizanoides

• Distilled from the root of the grass vetiver.
• Said to be very relaxing.
• Works well as a fixative in perfumery.
• Has a very heavy aroma so use sparingly.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• Use for acne, cuts, depression, aches and pains, stress, and wounds.
• An antiseptic, antispasmodic, rubefacient, nervous system sedative, and circulatory stimulant.
• Used in insect and rodent repellents.

Wintergreen (synthetic only): Methyl salicylate

• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some are sensitive.
• The gaultheria procumbens (True Wintergreen) is extremely toxic.
• The synthetic version (Methyl salicylate) works just as well for controlling pain, inflammation, joint pain, sciatica, neuralgia, myalgia and muscle stiffness.
• Absorbed through the skin for liniment and ointments.
• Effects are similar to aspirin.
• Do not use if pregnant.
• An astringent, carminative, anti-rheumatic, antispasmodic, antiseptic, and aromatic.
• Good for boils, bites, swelling, ulcers warts, sore muscles, and sores.
• Blends well with oregano, mints, thyme, ylang ylang, narcissus and vanilla.
• Even synthetic wintergreen can cause irritation and must be used cautiously.
• True wintergreen is poisonous except in very small amounts, so please use the synthetic compound only.

Yarrow: Achillea millefolium

• Specifically used for hypertension.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• An anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, hypotensive, calmative, anti-rheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, carminative, and expectorant.
• Use for headaches, fevers colds, influenza, sleep disturbances, nervousness, nosebleeds, anorexia, high blood pressure, digestive problems diarrhea, gonorrhea, toothache, and lack of appetite
• Said to produce a feeling of peace and relaxation in menopausal women.
• Blends well with cedarwood, pine, chamomile, valerian, vetiver and oak moss.

Ylang Ylang: Canangium odoratum

• May cause headache and nausea if not used in moderation.
• For external use only, always dilute.
• Some may be sensitive.
• Floral scent.
• Said to abate anger, relax the mind, body and spirit and act as an anti-depressant and aphrodisiac.
• Use for frigidity, high blood pressure, insomnia, stress, hair growth, skin diseases fevers, infections, and insect bites.
• An aphrodisiac, anti-depressant, anti-infectious, antiseptic, and euphoric.
• Use in cosmetic and hair care products.
• Blends well with rosewood, jasmine, vetiver, bergamot, mimosa, and rose.
